DAILY PRACTICE

OM SHANTI

Calm Within What is Happening

Story

During a retreat, a monk explained it through a simple story: a student told his teacher he couldn’t find calm. There was always noise, thoughts, people, problems. The teacher took him to a crowded place. They sat there, surrounded by movement and sound.

After a while, he asked, “Did the noise go away?” The student said no. The teacher replied, “Then stop waiting for the world to change so you can be at peace.”

In the Vedic traditions of India, the phrase Om Shanti Shanti Shanti appears in the Upanishads, texts that point to the nature of mind and awareness. Om refers to everything that is happening. Shanti is peace within it.

A tantrum. An intense moment. Raised voices. A teenager pushing back. Arguing. Testing.
The impulse is immediate. Control it, stop it and shut it down. When you enter the noise, it grows. When you stay steady, something shifts. Not because the moment disappears, it is still there, and you are no longer adding to it.

Shift

Peace is not found after the moment…it’s held during it.

Action (Today, With Your Children)

When things escalate today:

  • Observe yourself before responding.

  • Take one slow breath and feel your body (hand on chest or abdomen).

  • Hold your tone steady before speaking.

  • No rush to resolve or deal with it.

The moment doesn’t have to settle first. You do
