Wisdom Of Listening First
Story
My daughter was 3 years old. She had spilled juice across the kitchen table while trying to pour it herself. A total mess: the cup tipped over, carrot juice ran everywhere, and before she could even react, I started reacting: "You have to be more careful." "Look what happened." "You should have asked me first." "If you slow down, this doesn't happen."
She looked at the puddle. Then at me. Then back at the puddle. She wasn't thinking about the spilled juice. She wasn't refusing to listen…she was trying to become capable. And I had responded to the mess instead of the child.
I had spoken long enough to teach a lesson. I hadn't listened long enough to understand what had actually happened.
Among the Rarámuri people of the Sierra Tarahumara in Chihuahua, Mexico, Nawesari is the advice or spoken wisdom that takes place in traditional community gatherings led by the Siriame, the elder governor. When important matters are brought before the community, the elder does not begin by speaking. He first listens to the people, to the silence, and to what has not yet been said. Only then do his words carry wisdom.
The Rarámuri understand something fathers easily forget. Listening is not what happens before wisdom. Listening is wisdom.
Children rarely need a longer explanation. They need enough space for us to discover what was really happening inside them.

Pause.
Ask one simple question: "Can you tell me what happened?" Then listen until they finish.
You may discover that what needed your attention was never the mistake.
The wisest father is not the one who speaks first.
He is the one whose child feels heard before a single lesson begins.
