KAMI
An Inner World
Story
There is a scene in Inside Out animated film that quietly captures something many fathers have experienced. Riley (the little girl in the movie) has just moved across the country. Everything familiar is gone: her friends, home and routines.
Her parents keep trying to help: "Give it time.", "It'll get better.", "You'll make new friends."
The words are kind and little by little, Riley begins saying less. She smiles when she's expected to and keeps the real conversation inside herself. The silence isn't defiance becomes a protection.
She doesn't know how to carry everything she's feeling, so she carries it alone. Many children do.
Not because children don't trust their parents. The thing is that disappointment or strong emotion has slowly become a place where retreat feels safer than remaining open.
In the Shinto tradition of Japan, Kami refers to the sacred presence that lives within the world. A mountain, river or a tree may be kami. Even an ordinary place can become sacred when approached with reverence.
Kami is about relationship. It begins with the understanding that something precious is already there before you arrive. Children carry that same kind of inner sacred space: thoughts they cannot yet explain. Fears they cannot yet name or feelings that often disappear the moment someone tries to fix them too quickly.
A father cannot force that world to open. Remain patience and see through it.
Shift
Your children silence is not empty. It is often protecting something they don't yet know how to share.
Action (Today, With Your Children)
When If your children becomes quiet during a difficult moment, resist filling the silence.
Stay close. Let them know you're there.
Consider saying something like: "You don't have to talk yet. I'll stay with you."
Sometimes presence opens a door that questions cannot.
