Timeless wisdom lived through fatherhood
DAILY PRACTICE
HAUX
A Call To Presence And Truth
Story
There was a man I met in a plant medicine retreat who hadn't spoken to his son in 3 years. Not a dramatic falling out. No single event he could point to. Just a slow shutdown that had happened over time every time tension arose between them, his son would go quiet.
Eyes down and one word answers. A wall that appeared so fast it was almost invisible, and once it was up, nothing got through.
The father had tried everything he knew: direct conversation, giving space and writing a letter. His son would receive it all in the same way politely, quietly and completely closed.
You could see it in the way of his body language. The weight of a man who loves someone he can no longer reach.
In the Yawanawá tradition of the Brazilian Amazon, Haux is a sacred word spoken in ceremony it can be consider an invocation of presence and truth. It is not a casual expression.
When an elder speaks Haux at the opening of a ceremony, it is a call for everything that is hidden to become visible. For what has been closed to open. For truth to have a place to land safely.
That night, during the ceremony, in the depths of his own journey, he saw something he had not been able to see before. He saw his son shutting down, this time he saw it from the inside. He felt what the boy felt the moment conflict arose. The tightening and the familiar sense that the space was not safe enough to stay open in.
And then he saw something else. He saw where his son had learned it. The man saw himself, ten years old, twelve, fifteen, doing the exact same thing with his own father.
Shutting down, going quiet and disappearing behind a wall the moment things got tense. It was the only tool he had been given. And without knowing it, he had passed it to his son without ever meaning to.
He wept for a long time. Not from guilt. From recognition.
When he shared this to me, he said only this: "I taught him to close. I didn't know I was doing it. Now I have to teach him something different, first I have to learn it myself."
Shift
Before you can reach your children, ask yourself who taught him that first.
Action (Today, With Your Children)
The next time conflict begins to rise between you and your children, change what you offer them.
Lower your voice instead of raising it.
Slow your body. Say, for example: "We don't have to solve this right now. I just want you to know the door stays open."
Then leave it there. No pressure. No follow up.
Let them feel that staying open is safe, one moment at a time, until it becomes the new pattern.
What is hidden becomes visible,
allowing truth to have a place to land safely.
