Timeless wisdom lived through fatherhood
DAILY PRACTICE
BUSHIDO
The Discipline Of The Warrior
Story
He told his son they would clean the garage that morning. An hour later, the tools were still scattered. The father checked the time in his phone. Sat down. Let it pass. The boy waited for a moment, then disappeared inside. Later that day, the father called him back. “Let’s finish what we started.”
Just the task, picked up where it was left. Nothing impressive. Just completion. In Japan, Bushido means “the way of the warrior.” Not just skill in combat, a code of conduct, discipline, integrity, and self-control carried into daily life.
Miyamoto Musashi, a legendary undefeated samurai, taught that the way of the sword is not separate from how a person walks, speaks, or finishes what he begins.
Reflect in your day to day, what is said with intention…and what is left undone when no one is watching. Children follow example. They follow completion.
Shift
Character is not declared it is revealed in what you finish.
Action (Today, With Your Children)
Choose one task you already committed to do:
Complete it, even if it feels minor.
Say less, let the action lead.
Invite your children to stand beside you while you finish.
Just follow through: Finish cleaning the garage you started, water the plants you said you would, taking out the trash when it’s full, returning items to their place after use.
Children learn character by observing the consistency between what you say and what you do
