Timeless wisdom lived through fatherhood
DAILY PRACTICE
APAPACHO
To Touch Someone With The Soul
Story
Years ago, while visiting the pyramids of Xochicalco, a pre-Hispanic ceremonial site located in the hills south of Cuernavaca, Mexico. I was invited to an small evening in a cacao circle.
The sun had already disappeared behind the hills, and the air carried a quiet stillness that often settles over sacred places after dusk.
An elder abuela was guiding the gathering. She handed me a cup of cacao and placed her hand on my shoulder. She didn’t explain anything at first. Just contact. Warm, steady and very intentional.
The gesture was simple, maternal. For a moment, I felt the warmth of that contact strongly than any words. Then she said softly, “This is called Apapacho.”
The word comes from Nahuatl (indigenous Mexican language). It’s often translated as a hug. It means “to touch someone with the soul”, “that you are not alone”.
Shift
Connection is not always spoken, many times it is transmitted through contact.
