ALETHEIA

Truth Appears When You Slow Down

Story

In ancient Greek thought, the word Aletheia means truth, this refer to revealing something that was hidden, becomes visible. The philosopher Socrates taught that truth often appeared this way. Instead of giving lectures, he asked questions until a truth revealed itself.

A friend of mine once shared a moment with his teenage son. The boy had suddenly become obsessed with a new trend he was seeing everywhere, friends at school were talking about it, influencers on social media were promoting it, and it had quickly become something he insisted he needed.

My friend’s first instinct was to push back and explain why it was unnecessary. Instead, he paused and asked a simple question. “What do you actually like about it?”

The boy thought for a moment and then said something unexpected. It wasn’t really about the object at all.

He admitted he mostly wanted it because everyone else seemed to have it and he didn’t want to feel left out. In that moment “a truth” became visible. It wasn’t about the trend. It was about belonging. That quiet moment of observing himself, was the essence of Aletheia.

Shift

Truth is not given, it is revealed when we ground instead of react.

Action (Today, With Your Children)

Practice uncovering what is really happening. do this:

  • When your children share something influenced by friends, school, or social media, pause before reacting.

  • Ask a few open questions instead of giving an immediate corrective opinion.

  • “What do you like about it?” “What made you interested in that?” “Do you think your friends feel the same way?” “How did you first hear about it?”

  • There can be other type of scenarios: when your children say they don’t like a teacher, when they suddenly want something everyone else have, when they repeat an idea they heard from friends.
