Timeless wisdom lived through fatherhood

DAILY TRANSMISSION

ACTA NON VERBA

Actions Speak First

Story

A Roman emperor once wrote to himself as a reminder: “don’t waste time talking about virtue, live it”. That man was Marcus Aurelius.

He governed an empire, yet his personal writings returned to the same point: character is not proven in words, in what a man does repeatedly, especially when no one is watching.

I saw something similar as a child. One afternoon, my grandfather stepped out for a walk. I followed. We reached a neighbor’s house. Something had broken.

My grandfather didn’t explain anything. He didn’t give instructions. He walked over, rolled up his sleeves, and began helping. They worked for a while.

On the way back, I asked him why he helped. He answered without pause: “Because he needed it.” That was it.

The phrase Acta Non Verba means actions, not words, captures that exact moment.
Not explained. Done. Children many times don’t follow what is said. They follow what is demonstrated.

The Shift

Action teaches, words only describe.

Action (Today, With Your Children)

Do one simple act without announcing it:

  • Help someone, fix or organize something smoothly.

  • Acknowledge someone who is usually overlooked.

  • Do not announce the action or seek recognition.

  • If they ask why you did it, answer from your experience.

Children remember the moments when they see their parents act with integrity. Let your child see it. Then continue.

That’s where words stop being necessary
